Australia rocked as Steve Smith ruled out of crucial third Ashes Test

Australia have been dealt a significant setback on the eve of the third Ashes Test against England, with star batter Steve Smith ruled out of the match after falling ill.

Smith had been struggling with health issues in the days leading up to the Adelaide Oval clash and was officially withdrawn on the morning of the Test. Veteran opener Usman Khawaja was named as his replacement, stepping back into the XI at a critical moment in the series.

Captain Pat Cummins confirmed Smith’s absence after winning the toss and opting to bat first under clear, sunny conditions in Adelaide.

“Steve isn’t feeling well and has headed home,” Cummins said.
“We’re fortunate to have someone of Usman’s quality ready to step in.”

Khawaja will take over Smith’s customary No.4 position in the batting order, prompting a reshuffle at the top where Travis Head will once again open alongside Jake Weatherald.

Cricket Australia later issued an update on Smith’s condition, reassuring fans that the right-hander is expected to recover in time for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

“Over the past few days Steve has been feeling unwell, with symptoms including nausea and dizziness,” the statement said.
“He was closely monitored and came close to being available, but due to the persistence of symptoms, the decision was made not to play him. He is being treated for a possible vestibular issue, something he has experienced intermittently in the past, and is being managed appropriately. He is expected to be available for the Boxing Day Test.”

Smith’s absence means Australia enter the pivotal Adelaide Test with three changes from the side that cruised to an eight-wicket win in Brisbane. Nathan Lyon returns to the XI alongside Cummins and Khawaja, while Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett and Smith make way.

England skipper Ben Stokes admitted at the toss that he would also have chosen to bat first. The visitors made one alteration to their lineup, handing Josh Tongue an opportunity as fellow seamer Gus Atkinson drops out.
