Athapaththu to lead Sri Lanka as they name squad for India T20I challenge

Sri Lanka have unveiled a 15-member squad for their upcoming T20I series against India, with captain Chamari Athapaththu continuing at the helm as the team begins its build-up to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England next year.

Athapaththu will be supported by experienced batter Harshitha Samarawickrama, who has been named vice-captain for the tour. The squad blends experience with youth, highlighting Sri Lanka’s intent to strengthen depth ahead of a busy international calendar.

One of the notable inclusions is 17-year-old ambidextrous spinner Shashini Gimhani, who makes her return to the national side for the first time since August 2024. The selectors have also rewarded promising performances by handing a maiden call-up to Nimesha Madushani, adding fresh pace options to the group.

The squad features regulars Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunaratne and Nilakshika De Silva at the top, while all-rounders such as Kavisha Dilhari and Inoka Ranaweera are expected to play key roles throughout the series.

The five-match T20I contest will get underway on December 21 in Visakhapatnam, which will also host the second and third matches. The series will then move south to Thiruvananthapuram for the final two games, providing Sri Lanka with a stern test against one of the strongest sides in world cricket as their World Cup preparations gather momentum.
