Shoaib Akhtar tips rising Bangladesh pace power to shake up T20 World Cup 2026

Pakistan fast-bowling legend Shoaib Akhtar has voiced strong belief in Bangladesh’s potential to make a deep impact at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, backing their rapidly improving pace attack to challenge the world’s best.

Akhtar, who has stepped into the T20 franchise arena for the first time as a mentor with Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League, says his focus is firmly on helping shape the next generation of Bangladeshi fast bowlers. With the global tournament set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the former speedster feels Bangladesh are heading in the right direction at the perfect time.

“I genuinely hope Bangladesh become a major force at the World Cup,” Akhtar said.
“This is one of the most exciting teams around right now. I want to see them go far, climb the ladder, and maybe even win the World Cup.”

A key reason behind Akhtar’s optimism is the steady rise of Bangladesh’s fast-bowling resources. He singled out Taskin Ahmed for special praise, even encouraging the seamer to challenge his iconic record for sheer pace.

“I would love to see Taskin break my speed record,” he remarked.
“The pace group Bangladesh have is shaping up really well, and I truly hope they carry this momentum into the World Cup.”

Akhtar also shared thoughts on Nahid Rana, currently regarded as Bangladesh’s quickest bowler, stressing that elite fast bowling is as much about discipline and mindset as raw speed.

“Fast bowling puts enormous stress on the body,” he explained.
“If he keeps training properly and follows the right methods, I’m sure he’ll go a long way. I’d happily share the secrets of training with him if I get the chance. But above everything else, attitude is crucial — what you carry in life shows on the field.”

While eager to contribute his own experience, Akhtar was quick to credit Bangladesh’s current bowling coach Shaun Tait, acknowledging his role in developing genuine pace within the squad.

“Shaun Tait is one of the best fast-bowling coaches you could ask for,” Akhtar said.
“He’s an outstanding professional and one of the most honest people in the game.”

Bangladesh come into the new year with confidence after closing their T20I calendar by defeating Ireland 2-1 in a home series earlier this month. Drawn into Group B of the T20 World Cup alongside England, West Indies, Nepal and Italy, they will kick off their campaign against West Indies on February 7 in Kolkata — a fixture that could set the tone for their tournament ambitions.
